Day Tours in Costa Rica

Hiking: Poás Volcano and Bosque del Niño

Daily departures: 7:30 a.m.

First visit active Poás Volcano for a 2 hour walk inside the national park. Then walk to Bosque del Niño, part of the Grecia National Forest. The walk is mostly downhill and will be a good opportunity to experience how elevation affects local flora. The walk starts at 1928 meters above sea level and ends at 1735 meters above sea level.

Poás Volcano

Poás Volcano is one of the most visited volcanoes in Costa Rica due its proximity to San Jose and because of the luxuriant forest that surrounds the two craters. The park measures 5600 hectares, and this basaltic volcano stands at an altitude of 2708 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level.

One of the craters measures 1.5 kilometers in diameter (0.9 miles) and is 300 meters deep (900 feet). At the bottom is a medium sized lagoon and several active fumaroles. The volcano also has another dormant crater that has filled with rainwater and is called the Botos Lagoon named after the Botos Native Americans that populated the areas surrounding the volcano

Poás Volcano has had a long history of eruptions, going back as much as 11 million years. On January 25, 1910, the volcano spewed out 640,000 tons of ash, and in the period of 1952-1954, it covered nearby areas with ash and rocks. Since then, the Poás has been less active but as recently as 1989 and then again in 2009 the park was closed because of dangerous gas emissions. Its geyser-like eruptions of water and steam have given it the reputation as the world’s largest geyser.

Bosque del Niño

“The Children’s Forest” was established in 1979 to coincide with the International Year of the Child and was given its name because children from the local communities reforested approximately 16 acres with non-native species. Bosque del Niño protects the watershed that supplies water to the town of Grecia and Alajuela and is also an important biological corridor between Poás Volcano National park and nearby forested areas.
